25 Things I have learned since beginning college

I thought that in light of finishing up college (yes, I am officially finished as of tomorrow...and an official graduate as of June 12th), I would like to share some things I have learned since I have been out on my own. Hopefully it'll give you all some insight.

1. Don't take advantage of the fact that someone likes you as more than a friend. Dating them for 2 months when you have no relationship feelings for them is not the best decision.

2. Good papers/assignments take time, rushing through them will not get you the greatest marks.

3. When you have a test coming up based on the course text book, it is best to read it otherwise you will wind up drawing pictures on the front page of your test with a quote admitting to your lack of effort.

4. You know that saying "Money is no object." ? Well it is, it is the determiner of how long you will be living at your current place of residence.

5. It is okay to ask for help. You may feel guilty asking your parents for help with money, food, etc. but they are there to support you in any way they can. It's okay to feel guilty.

6. Give yourself more than 2 weeks after ending a relationship to begin a new dating venture. It doesn't always work out in your favour.

7. If I didn't know how to cook fabulous meals (fettuccine alfredo, seasoned pork, honey garlic chicken, etc.), I would have gained the freshman 15, garunteed.

8. Having a lot of friends isn't the most important thing in the world. Sometimes it's best to have one or two people you hang out with at school. There is less drama.

9. 25 year old guys are more dramatic than 15 year old girls. Proof that even when you think they have grown up, mentally they will always be 15.

10. Beer tastes good. It tastes even better when it's free. I am no mooch but when people want you to hang out with them and you have no money, they'll share their beer.

11. Pizza Pizza is your best friend, especially when it is just down the street. It's always worth paying the extra 3 bucks for delivery.

12. When you're in a 98% girl program (that's about 98 to 1), and you want to date, sometimes online dating is your best bet. There are less freaks on there than you think.

13. Journalling, writing, and blogging keeps your sanity. If you stop doing those things you might go crazy.

14. Zehrs is expensive, they have better quality food but sometimes it's worth the 20-30 minute bus ride for 30 pounds of groceries.

15.  You will barely ever stay friends with all the people you were friends with in high school. Your once friends will become now acquaintances. You will find out that you have less in common than you used to. But there is almost always one person you just stay friends with. This person is most likely your best friend.

16. At one point or another when you rent a room in a house you will have one or all of the following 3 roommates: A TMI David, A Rachel, A James or a Terrorsaur.
The TMI David: This is the roommate who is great company, however he will share information that you just never want to hear and always at the worst times. This person is able to slip sexual innuendos into most conversations. Will share what he did last night or how great he is in bed. It could be misinterpreted as a huge ego. But you will likely miss him when he is not around.
The Rachel: This roommate could become your best friend. You will find more in common with her than you thought. Her family will become your family. She is loud and you always know when she is around. She talks a lot, but it's bearable talking because she will share with you exciting stories. Sometimes she will repeat herself but the stories are exciting to hear. If you think you had history, she will one up you.
The James: This roommate could be gay, but could also be straight (questionably gay). He will be the reason that your Kitchen is always clean and will brain ninja you into changing your bad habits. He is usually really smart and makes you question your own knowledge of things. He is likely a wine drinker and when drunk is absolutely fantastic to be around. He could be scared of spiders but is good at catching people off gaurd. His one true skill is single handedly unhooking bras. It's a waste of a skill when he's gay.
The Terrorsaur (the Stephanie): This is the roommate you have been excited for yet dreading. She seems pretty normal on the outside, on the inside she is a party of excitement. You will rarely see her without a smile. She will be able to pull some of the strangest things off and make them look good. She is easily caught off guard and if you make her laugh, she will stop breathing and then squeak. She also freezes in a fit of laughter. She knows random facts and almost always knows how to cheer people up. When she gets her hands on cameras/video cameras, you best prepare to be followed.

17. When invited to do something, always do it (unless you have previous commitments or literally a lot of homework), if you don't you will constantly be wondering "What if?"

18. When in college, have fun because your future comes up quicker than you think.

19. When you live with guys, no one ever takes the blame for dirty dishes. Dishes will sit in the sink until you are the one to clean them...even when they are not yours.

20. Do at least one daring thing through college...mine was the polar plunge.

21. Free things are awesome. In college, at least once a week you will see booths set up around your school...check them out. You could learn a thing or two. They could also inspire you.

22. It's fun to learn something new and do it with friends. It doesn't matter if you're bad at it, it matters that you tried.

23. When relationships end, it's hard. But they are easy to get over. Sometimes, you miss the friendship you had even months after the relationship ends.

24. It's always good to plan your future, even if it's just 5 months or 15 months down the line. What you do now, counts in the future. It's important to realize that.

25. Cherish the moments and don't take your college days for granted. Everything comes to an end at some point. What matters most is using what you have learned in future ventures.
